PDRN: What is it, what are the benefits and is it right for my skin?

If you’re skincare obsessed like us, no doubt you’ve heard plenty about PDRN online. As with most viral trends and buzzwords it can be overwhelming and hard to sift through all of the noise, so we took the time to explain the history and science behind the so called “Salmon DNA” so that you can decide for yourself if it’s the right addition to your skincare routine.

WHAT IS PDRN?

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide, a purified extract of DNA fragments, traditionally derived from Salmon or Trout, although there now exist many plant-based alternatives. PDRN has been used in medical settings for decades as a means of accelerating the healing of wounds and it has similarly been a fixture for dermatologists for quite some time. However its use has been confined to clinical settings until very recently, primarily as an injectable to help with scar-reduction, anti-ageing and hyperpigmentation. Korean skincare brands were among the first to see its potential and began adding the ingredient to topical treatments, leading to an explosion in popularity not only in Asia but across the globe. 

 

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

 PDRN demonstrates anti-ageing benefits by activating the purinergic A2A receptor, triggering cell proliferation and stimulating collagen and elastin production; resulting in improved firmness, elasticity and reduced wrinkles and fine-lines. Basically what this means is that the DNA fragments found in PDRN activate repair signals in our own skin, incentivising and accelerating cell regeneration. In addition to this, much has been said of its effects when it comes to hydration and barrier restoration. While these benefits are extrapolated from the ingredient’s use in clinical settings, this is in large part because its use in topical solutions is much more recent and there is as yet little scientific research and literature to either support or refute these claims.

IS PDRN RIGHT FOR ME?

PDRN is great because it is very gentle as far as actives go, it tends to suit most skin-types, and can be added to most routines with ease. If you are concerned about a loss of skin elasticity, dry or dull skin, the appearance of scars, wrinkles or fine-lines then chances are you stand to gain from incorporating PDRN into your routine. One thing to note is that if you have young skin (particularly if you are under 25) or have none of the concerns listed above, then more than likely you will see few results from using PDRN. That said, one of PDRN’s greatest strengths is one that is rarely spoken about; that being that PDRN is very good at bonding to other active ingredients and increasing their efficacy.

ADDING PDRN TO YOUR ROUTINE

As always, we don’t recommend throwing your existing routine out and starting over entirely from scratch. When it comes to skincare, much like your own progress and skin goals, change should be a more gradual endeavour. We suggest instead taking one element of your routine and substituting a product for a PDRN-based alternative. As mentioned above, PDRN excels at amplifying the effects of other ingredients.
